Tangoing on Through Terror

“No mistakes in the tango, darlin’. Not like life. It’s simple. That’s what makes the tango so great. You make a mistake, get all tangled up, just tango on.”

— Al Pacino, “The Scent of a Woman”

Terrorists struck again. Their bombs in Brussels massacred 31 men, women and children and maimed or dismembered another 300-some.

The terrorists stated that they were Muslims, and stated that they committed their terror in the name of Islam.

Attributing such words to the Islamic terrorists who speak them is deemed “Islamophobia” by the politically correct crowd. Their fear of Islamophobia rises to the level of a phobia itself. Call it “Islamophobia-phobia.”

As between Islamophobia and Islamophobia-phobia, the second feels better but the first is less lethal.

In that regard, a sobering survey was conducted a couple of years ago by the Pew Research Center. It found that a quarter of U.S. Muslims between 18 and 29 (and nearly half those in France) believe that suicide bombing is justified.

Islam may be peaceful, but a disconcerting number of its adherents are not.

When the bombs went off in Belgium, President Barack Obama was vacationing in Havana. The local tyrants feted him after rounding up and jailing any freedom-fighting dissidents who might crash their party.

When it came time for a speech, he dodged controversial topics like freedom. As for the massacre in Belgium by a group that he once mistakenly dismissed as “the JV team,” he devoted all of 58 seconds to it. Consistent with his Islamophobia-phobia (having 24/7 armed guards around him permits him to choose that second phobia), he made no mention of the motives of the murderers.

He did inform us, again, that the terrorist threat was not “existential.” The 31 people whose existence was ended by those terrorists could not be reached for comment.

Then he read a speech from the teleprompter begging the Cuban people to love him more, since Americans now seem to love him less.

His speech didn’t call for hope and change in Cuba. Maybe that’s because he no longer has any need for sloganeering. Or maybe it’s because he thinks that unlike America, Cuba doesn’t need changing.

A generation ago, President Ronald Reagan went to Berlin to tell the jailers of that city to “tear down this wall.” Obama want to Cuba last month to tell the communist overlords of that island prison that he “welcomed” their criticism of the American record on human rights and he “personally would not disagree” with many of them.

Then it was off for a photo op. While the Belgians were still mopping up the blood spilled by 21st-century terrorists, he and his entourage posed in front of a giant Soviet style mural of 20th-century Cuban terrorist Che Guevara.

Later, he went to a baseball game with the head tyrant. They ate hotdogs and did the wave.

But duty called, so he boarded Air Force One. Out of respect for the victims and their families, he cut short his hijinks and flew back to Washington to lead the world through this tragedy.

No, that’s a cruel joke. Actually, he flew to Argentina for more hijinks.

There, while the Belgians were desperately hunting for the terrorists and still figuring out which limbs went with which body so that they could bury them together, he went dancing.

He danced the tango. The woman led.

This president of what used to be called “the free world” dances the tango while the whole planet burns. While the world gets tangled up, he just tangos on.

Pacino’s character knew that the tango is simple but life is not. In life, you make mistakes and must correct them. You can’t just tango on.

Is Obama really this clueless, or is he taunting us?
