The Barbary pirates were a ragtag gang of North African pirates who terrorized Europe for centuries. They pirated commercial shipping, raided as far north as Ireland and Iceland to abduct and enslave Europeans –especially women – for the harems of the Middle East, and exacted tribute in exchange for safe ocean passage.
In two wars, the new United States of America put an end to them. The first was in 1801-1805. The second was ten years later and lasted just a few days, permanently putting the barbarian Barbarians out of business. America and Europe finally stopped paying tribute and ransom and enduring slave raids.
Fast forward to the year 2023. Modern-day Barbary pirates in Iran routinely kidnap Americans and Europeans to hold for ransom. Last week, the Biden administration paid an astonishing $6 billion for the release of six of them – a billion dollars each if my math serves.
Does this not encourage future abductions?
We need to put these barbarians out of business. This entails two things.
First, announce a policy that America will no longer pay ransom for abducted Americans. It is possible that a few abductees will be murdered as the bad guys test our resolve. But that’s better than having hundreds at risk by paying the abductors billions. In short, this policy will require something in short supply in Washington: courage.
Second, announce that we will hold accountable the abductors – whether it’s Iran or Russia or anyone else.
Apart from the two-hundred-year-old precedent of the Barbary pirates, there’s more recent precedent. In the 1972 Olympics held in Munich, sixteen Israeli athletes were massacred by Palestinian terrorists. It took decades, but the Israelis brought them to justice. In a mission dubbed “Wrath of God” the Mossad assassinated most of the perpetrators. Since then, there hasn’t been a similar terrorist incident against Israel.
Joe Biden probably lacks the stones for this, but the Mossad doesn’t.

“Kill them,” with consummate “Wrath of God” fury, pretty much expresses my feelings about a lot of people these days — drug pushers, human traffickers, smash-and-grab looters, randomly sucker-punching, homicidal psychotics, pederasts and perversion-peddling librarians, Epstein-Island predators, fire-setting eco-terrorists, and all those who enable these barbarous scourges (who will now probably put me on a watchlist).
Well there may not be similar but through today there’s still attacks on Israel by basically those same people only “Those People” now have a plethora of outside supporters, even in our Congress. Few seem to remember just who set the PLO up, Arafat was 1/2 half the component but the other was KGB, the gift that the Soviets kept on giving.
